EPIONI – Greek Carers Network, with the aim of equal participation of young caregivers of people with chronic conditions in society, participated in a transnational meeting organized by the SESYCARE project partner, Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU). The hybrid meeting took place in Istanbul, Turkey, on January 11 and 12, 2022, in the framework of the European Erasmus+ project SESYCARE on the need for social entrepreneurship education for young caregivers. In this second international meeting, apart from EPIONI, the Dutch Foundation of Innovation Welfare 2 Work from the Netherlands, Eurosud from Italy, and the Academy of Entrepreneurship from Greece also participated in person, while the partners Wind of Renewal from Greece and Consorzio SGS from Italy attended the meeting online.
The first day of the meeting started with the welcome of the participants.
Then İbrahim Halil YAŞAR, the Dean of Students delivered a presentation “Introduction of the Dean of Students”.
Erdem Ünal ELLİ from Psychological Counseling and Guidance Center delivered a presentation “Introduction of the Psychological Counseling and Guidance Center”.
On Wednesday, 12th January 2022 a focus group of young carers was held and moderated by Istanbul Gelisim University. The focus group shared their experience of growing up in a family with a disabled parent or sibling. İrem ÇAKIR, İbrahim Halil YAŞAR and Serdar BATURALP from Turkey share their life story and the implications of being a young caregiver of people with Down syndrome and physical disability.
After the lunch break, a discussion took place between the partners on the progress of the SESYCARE project. The meeting was chaired by Mrs Akylina Despoti, Neuropsychologist from the coordinator.
During the second day of the transnational meeting, a focus group with young caregivers was held, coordinated by Istanbul Gelişim University. The focus group participants shared their experience growing up in a family with a parent or sibling with a disability. İrem ÇAKIR, İbrahim Halil, and YAŞAR Ali BİRİNCİ from Turkey narrated their story and the impact of being a young caregiver of people with Down syndrome and physical disabilities.
After the focus group, Dr. Aman SADO ELEMO from the Psychology Department of Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) presented on the subject of the psychosocial burden of young caregivers.
Then, Dr. Esra SAVAŞ from the Psychology Department of Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) spoke about the family dynamics where there is a young caregiver
In closing, the participants talked about the next steps of the SESYCARE project, with the Dutch Foundation of Innovation Welfare 2 Work partners presenting the training on promoting social entrepreneurship to young caregivers to be held in Leiden, the Netherlands, on February 26-28, 2022. The two-day meeting concluded with thanks and farewell to the partners who renewed their appointment for February 2022.
